Phelps and Coughlin Win Top Honors at Golden Goggles

11/21/08 Olympic champions Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) and Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) were in attendance to accept top honors tonight at the USA Swimming Foundation’s Golden Goggle Awards. Phelps and Coughlin took home the awards for Male and Female Athlete of the Year, respectively. The Golden Goggle Awards, held at the New York Hilton and hosted by Bob Costas, celebrated the accomplishments of 2008 Olympic Swim Team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

15 U.S. Open Records Fall in town at 2008 U.S. Open

August 4th, 2008. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – On the final day of competition at the 2008 U.S. Open, Chad La Tourette (Mission Viejo, Calif.) lowered both the U.S Open record and the meet record in the men’s 800m freestyle. Throughout the five-day meet, a total of 15 meet records were broken.

Jessica Hardy Fails Drug Test

July 24th, 2008. U.S. swimmer Jessica Hardy has tested positive for a banned stimulant and expedited arbitration proceedings aimed at resolving whether she will remain eligible for the 2008 Olympics have been launched. Hardy, 21, of Los Angeles, tested positive at the U.S. Olympic Trials for the banned stimulant clenbuterol, her attorney, Howard Jacobs, confirmed late Wednesday. "Jessica denies that she has taken any prohibited substances," he said. "We're looking into explanations for the positive [tests]."

July 21, 2008. The AFP is reporting that Grant Hackett has broken his own short course meters 800m freestyle world record with a new mark of 7:23.42 at the Victorian Short Course Championships in Melbourne on Saturday. The old world standard was 7:25.28.

July 19th, 2008. In news of the type you really hate to see with the Beijing Olympics so close at hand, news of another positive doping test has arrived from across the Atlantic, with the name being one many are familiar with in the United States.

July 17th, 2008 Athletic director Lisa Love said Tuesday the school was able to reinstate men's swimming because of financial support from various donors across the globe.

German Swimmer Makes Olympic Team Through Court Ruling

July 16, 2008. Bernhardt finished directly behind 2nd place finisher Anne Poleska (bronze medalist at the 2004 Olympics) and it is Poleska that was targeted in the lawsuit. Bernhardt claims that Poleska violated the German swimming federation's rule that allows membership on foreign college or school teams, but not foreign clubs.

FINA Youth Swimming Championships: Day 6

July 14th, 2008. The United State of America was awarded the combined team score championship title, with a total of 820.5 points. Second, Japan with 634 and third Russia, with 585. The USA also won the overall medal count, with a total of 21, including the highest count of golds at 9. Russia was second with 7 gold medals and 13 total. New Zealand had the third most gold medals awarded, at five, while Japan had the third most total medals at 12.

FINA Youth Swimming Championships: Day 5

July 13th, 2008. After four days of overcast showers in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon the sun broke through and brought the temperature and humidity way up. Fans were passed out to spectators and athletes, though the day five finals of the FINA World Youth Champs brought enough heat in the races to void any cooling efforts.

July 12th, 2008. Perhaps the greatest race of the evening, Heerden Herman on South Africa posted an 8:01.77 to win the gold. Raoul Shaw of France was the early leader in the race, and at about the 400m mark Poland’s Krzysztof Pielowski came on to take the lead.

FINA Youth Swimming Championships: Day 3

If you competed in the 1st FINA World Youth Championships, and set a record, hopefully you spread the word in the last year – as it is likely you will no longer have that claim to fame. In the finals of day three of the championship meet, 7 of a possible 7 records were set, starting with the Men’s 800m Freestyle.

July 10th, 2008 Three females under 2:10 in the 200m butterfly? Three males under 1:50 in the 200m free? And a swimmer doubling up in the 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly? Yes, these are all truthful statements, as the second night of competition came to a close with a blistering pace now established as the norm.

FINA Youth Swimming Championships: Day 1

July 9, 2008 The meet is limited to swimmers aged 14 – 17 for girls, and 15 – 18 for boys; and has over 40 countries represented. All events are featured, including 50 meters of each stroke, with semi-finals scheduled for the events of 100m distance and under- the 200m distance events and up will go directly to finals, with the 800m and 1500m (each being offered to both genders) being timed finals.

Torres Won't Swim 100 Free in Beijing

July 8th, 2008 Torres will be replaced in the 100 free by Lacey Nymeyer, who finished third at the trials.
